Carpet Horror Story – High-End Home, Cheap Looking Carpet
Don’t assume that just because you live in a high-end neighborhood, the carpet installer servicing your area provides high-end services to match.
This carpet horror story was sent to us by someone who read my story about a client who saved $1,200 by using our carpet stretching and repair services.
Picture this. A bucolic setting in one of North Atlanta’s most sought-after communities. Exquisitely manicured lawns and a renowned golf course are just part of the surroundings.
The brick-front house, purchased for $750,000 at the height of the market, sits with its back facing the golf course. On Saturdays, the family can sit in their spacious eat-in kitchen and watch the play through their floor to ceiling windows, or join in, if they wish.
The feeling of opulence is destroyed, however, as soon as you enter one of the bedrooms.
Unsightly, wrinkled, buckling carpeting is what you see. Step carefully, lest you trip, fall, and injure yourself.
What caused this carpet horror story? Improper carpet installation combined with heavy traffic from the family’s dogs.
The homeowners thought that because they’d hired a carpet installer from the local area, they could count on getting high quality service. What they had instead was a front who hired unskilled subcontractors to complete the work.
In an effort to maximize profit by saving costs and rushing through the job, the carpet installer used a knee kicker instead of the recommended power stretcher. It only took a few months of the dogs running through the home to put the carpets in this damaged state.
In order to restore their carpet to pristine condition, the homeowners had to a hire and pay a company to re-stretch 2,000 square feet of carpeting.
Morale of this carpet horror story:
Make sure your carpet installer has the training and expertise you expect. When you call the company, ask if the work is done by subcontractors or employees. Ask if they are IICRC trained or certified. If not, make sure they are trained by another nationally recognized body. And, never, ever, ever let someone install your carpet if all they are using is a knee-kicker.
What are carpet horror stories?
These are true stories of when bad carpets happen to good people. Some are stories I’ve heard when clients hire me to fix damage left by untrained and unscrupulous carpet cleaning companies. Others are stories told to me by people who’ve read my blog.
No matter the source, these tongue-in-cheek stories have a serious purpose – to educate you so that you avoid losing money by hiring inept, unscrupulous carpet cleaning and installing companies.
