 Carpet doesn’t buckle randomly. There’s always a cause — and in close to 100% of cases, it comes down to one thing: the original installer used a knee kicker instead of a power stretcher.

A knee kicker is a finishing tool. It’s designed to tuck edges and make minor adjustments — not to stretch a full room of carpet. When an installer uses it as the primary stretching tool, the carpet appears flat initially but begins loosening from the tack strips within months. What looks like a properly installed floor on day one becomes a rippled, buckled surface within a year or two.

This is the most common carpet installation shortcut in the industry. Big-box store installers do it routinely because it’s faster. The homeowner pays the price years later.

Other contributing factors include:

Atlanta’s humidity. The humid subtropical climate causes carpet fibers and backing to expand and contract with seasonal temperature changes. Over time this works the carpet loose from tack strips — especially carpet that was never properly stretched to begin with.

Heavy furniture. Sliding heavy furniture across carpet instead of lifting it creates stress points that pull the carpet away from tack strips at the edges. A single furniture move done incorrectly can undo years of proper installation.

How I Stretch Carpet — The Right Way 

Every re-stretching job follows the same process:

First, I disengage the carpet from the tack strips along the walls. Then any furniture in the room goes onto furniture sliders — I handle all the moving. I assemble the power stretcher at the furthest wall from the furniture load, run it across the full width of the room, and use the wall as leverage to push the carpet forward under consistent tension. The carpet is re-secured to the tack strips drum tight, the excess is trimmed, and the edges are tucked cleanly.

The power stretcher is what makes the difference. It applies even tension across the entire room simultaneously — not just at the point where a knee kicker touches. The result is flat carpet that stays flat. That’s why I can back the work with a lifetime warranty. A knee kicker job can’t be warranted because it won’t hold.

On cut pile carpet, the repair is typically invisible from standing height. On loop pile or Berber, the seam may be faintly visible — I’ll tell you that upfront before I start.
