What those homes have in common, regardless of when they were built, is that carpet buckles. And when it does, the fix is almost always the same.

Why Carpet Buckles — In Any Home, Any Era
Carpet buckling isn’t a function of how old a home is. It happens in newer construction and in established homes for the same core reason — carpet that wasn’t installed with adequate tension, or carpet that has loosened over time from foot traffic, furniture movement, and the natural expansion and contraction that comes with Georgia’s seasons.
A ripple in a five-year-old home and a ripple in a thirty-year-old home respond to the same fix. The equipment and the method are what determine whether the result holds — not the age of the house or the age of the carpet.
What the Job Actually Looks Like
Furniture moves to one side of the room on sliders — no need to remove anything from the house. The power stretcher is assembled wall to wall, the carpet is pulled taut across the full width of the room under consistent, even tension, re-secured to the tack strips, and the furniture comes back. Most single rooms take one to two hours. A whole house is typically a full day.
No chemicals. No drying time. The carpet is walkable immediately. One visit, done.
Why the Method Matters
Two tools exist for carpet stretching — a power stretcher and a knee kicker. They are not interchangeable.
The power stretcher uses the wall as leverage to pull the carpet taut across the full width of the room in a single consistent pass. The tension is even, the result is correct, and it holds because the physics are right.
The knee kicker is a finishing tool — twelve inches wide, designed for edge work and minor adjustments. When used as a primary stretching tool on a full room, the tension is uneven and localized. The carpet looks flat when the technician leaves. Weeks or months later it starts to come back. This is the most common reason homeowners call me after having carpet “stretched” by someone else.
I hold the RRT designation — Carpet Repair and Reinstallation Technician — from the IICRC, the global standard-setting body for the cleaning and restoration industry. The RRT covers exactly this: proper stretching technique, tool standards, and reinstallation methodology. I also hold the MTC — Master Textile Cleaner — the highest credential in the IICRC textile care track.
