What Caused Your Hallway Carpets To Wrinkle And Buckle

#1 Reason = Poor Installation

By far this will be the culprit a majority of the time. Unknowingly, many homeowners are victims of poor installation practices. If a carpet installer (even those from the big brand “home” stores) failes to use professional tools during installation, you can almost rest assured that somewhere down the line you will begin to see bubbling of your carpets.

Unfortunately by then, the installers are long gone, numbers disconnected, or no longer in business. Leaving homeowners to sort out the mess all by themselves.  I mean, how are you to know what type of equipment they should use? After all, carpet installation is not your area of expertise.

However, I will advise this – prior to any carpet installation please let your flooring company know that you expect your carpets to be installed according to the ‘ANSI/IICRC S600 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Carpet Installation” (more info found here).  The S600 Standard and Reference Guide covers both Residential and Commercial Carpet Installations. This industry consensus document gives specific guidance for the proper, recommended procedures for installing various carpet products in different types of installations.

Any flooring company that hears you using those terms will be stiffened to attention immediately.

Trust me!

Stretching Your Hallway Carpet Eliminates Trip And Fall Hazards

Carpets buckling in hallways can be trip and fall hazards. Especially for the young, elderly, and house guests.  In homes that were subject to poor installation as outlined above, you’ll find that it’s usually the hallways that buckle first and worst.

Why is that? Well, it’s primarily due to hallways being such a high-traffic area. High foot traffic accelerates the buckling and bubbling of carpets like you won’t believe. This is why guest bedrooms are typically the rooms that fair the best.

How Do We Removing Buckles From Your Hallway Carpet?

I won’t get too far into the weeds here, but first, we dis-engage the carpets from the tack strips along the walls.  Next, we do what’s known as ‘floating’ of the carpets to ensure once the stretching begins that the bubbles can be moved away.

We typically use what’s known as a room-stretcher (pictured below) to then begin re-installing (stretching) the carpets towards exterior walls where the excess is trimmed and tucked.

Viola! That’s it.

Well, there are rare cases where we may have to open and seam certain areas, but that’s pretty uncommon with us.
