Most homeowners overthink carpet stretching preparation. They imagine emptying rooms, moving furniture into the garage, scheduling the dog at a kennel for the day. None of that is necessary.
Here’s exactly what the day looks like — and the short list of things that actually need to be done before I arrive.
The Short Answer — Less Than You Think
You don’t need to empty the room. You don’t need to move furniture out of the house. You don’t need to vacate the home. The assumptions most homeowners make about what’s required before a carpet stretching job are almost always more than what’s actually needed — because a professional handles the heavy lifting as part of the service.
Before every job I send a confirmation email that includes the prep instructions — a short, specific list of what helps the job go smoothly. Here’s what that looks like in practice.

What You Actually Need to Do Before the Job
The list is short:
Remove breakables from furniture tops. Lamps, picture frames, decorative items, anything that could shift or fall when furniture is moved onto sliders. These take thirty seconds to relocate and prevent the kind of damage that nobody wants to deal with.
Disconnect and move large media devices. Televisions, gaming systems, sound equipment — anything plugged into the wall that can’t safely go on sliders. These need to come off the furniture before it moves.
Remove drawers from heavy dressers. If a dresser is in the room, pulling the drawers out lightens the load significantly. The dresser itself stays — just the drawers come out.
Secure pets. Dogs and cats in the work area slow the job and create safety issues — for them and for me. Either secure them in a room that isn’t being stretched or arrange for them to be out of the house during the job. This is the one prep item that makes the biggest difference to the timeline.
Clear items stored under beds. If the bed needs to be moved — which it usually does in a bedroom — anything stored underneath needs to come out first.
That’s the complete list. Everything else is handled on arrival.
What Atlanta Fresh Start Handles
Once I’m on-site, I take it from there.
All furniture moves using professional sliders — flat discs that allow heavy pieces to glide across carpet without dragging or scratching hardwood floors at the transitions. Every piece goes back exactly where it was when the job is done.
The power stretcher is assembled across the full width of the room. The carpet is disengaged from the tack strips, stretched wall-to-wall under consistent tension, re-secured, trimmed, and tucked. The entire process — from furniture moving to final tuck — is part of the job.
There’s no drying time. Carpet stretching doesn’t involve any moisture. The carpet is flat and ready to use the moment I finish.

How Long Does the Job Take?
A single room typically takes one to two hours. Two to three rooms runs a half day. A whole-house job is usually completed in one day.
You don’t need to be present for the entire job — just available at the start for a brief walkthrough of the areas being stretched and at the end for a final inspection before I leave. If something comes up during the job that needs your input, I’ll find you.
For more on what the re-stretch actually produces and how long the results last, read the carpet stretching and repair process here.
What If the Carpet Needs Cleaning Too?
If you’re planning to have the carpet stretched and cleaned, the sequence matters — stretch first, clean second. Always.
Cleaning a buckled carpet before stretching it wastes the cleaning. The power stretcher moves the carpet across the full width of the room during the stretch — that movement redistributes the fiber and can affect the cleaning result. Stretch the carpet flat first. Then clean. The cleaning works on an even, properly tensioned surface and produces a uniform result.
In most cases both services can be completed in the same visit — stretch in the morning, clean in the afternoon. One day, one appointment, done.
What to Expect After the Job
The carpet is flat immediately. No drying time, no waiting period before the furniture goes back. I move everything back into place before I leave.
Every stretching job comes with Atlanta Fresh Start’s lifetime warranty. If the carpet buckles again after I stretch it, I return at no charge to correct it. If I can’t correct it, you receive a full refund. That warranty is transferable — if you sell the home, it passes to the new owner.
