Here’s what I’ve learned in 35 years of stretching carpet across Atlanta: the signs don’t go away on their own. They get worse. And the longer you wait, the more work the carpet has done against itself — compressing unevenly, wearing at the stress points, and in some cases becoming a genuine safety hazard for everyone in the home.

Sign #1 — Visible Ripples, Waves, and Buckles Across the Floor

This is the most obvious sign and the one most homeowners recognize immediately. Ripples running across the middle of a room. Waves that shift slightly when you walk across them. Buckles that have been there so long they’ve started to feel normal.
They’re not normal. They’re the result of carpet that was never properly stretched during installation — or carpet that has loosened over time from foot traffic, furniture movement, and Atlanta’s relentless humidity working on the backing material.
The ripple you’re stepping over today was probably a barely-visible tension line six months ago. Give it another six months and it becomes a tripping hazard. Give it a year and the uneven wear pattern it creates starts permanently damaging the carpet fiber at the stress points.
Re-stretching at the first sign of rippling is always easier, faster, and less expensive than waiting until the problem has compounded.
Sign #2 — Carpet Lifting Away From Walls or Separating at Doorways

Check the edges of your carpet along the walls and at doorways. If the carpet has pulled away from the tack strips and is lifting off the floor, the tension has failed.
Doorways are especially telling. The transition point between rooms takes more foot traffic than almost anywhere else in the house, and it’s one of the first places a poorly installed carpet shows its age. A carpet separating at a doorway threshold isn’t just unsightly — it’s a trip hazard.
This is also common in homes where carpet was re-stretched previously using only a knee kicker. I’ve re-stretched carpet in Atlanta homes that another company had stretched six months earlier. The difference between a knee kicker job and a power stretcher job is visible within the first year.

Older adults, young children, and guests who aren’t familiar with your floor are the highest-risk groups. The Fix — What Professional Re-Stretching Actually Involves
Professional carpet stretching is a five-step process. The carpet is disengaged from the tack strips, furniture is moved onto sliders, a power stretcher is assembled at the far wall, the room is stretched wall-to-wall and re-secured, and everything is returned to its original position.
Most single rooms take one to two hours. A whole-house job is typically completed in one day. The home does not need to be vacant — I work in furnished rooms every day.

Not every carpet stretching job produces results that last — and the reason almost always comes down to tools.
A knee kicker is a finishing tool. It’s designed to tuck edges and make minor adjustments. It is not designed to stretch a full room of carpet. Any technician using only a knee kicker as their primary stretching tool is cutting corners — and the results typically loosen again within months because the tension was never properly established across the full width of the room.
